Special Law Enforcement Officers

As a critical part of our commitment public safety, the NTPD continues to expand our Special Law Enforcement Officer program. A Special Law Enforcement Officer, or “SLEO” is a part-time position, primarily occupied by those seeking a full-time career in Law Enforcement or retired Police Officers.

  • Qualifications and Duties for Class I Special Law Enforcement Officers:
    • There are no health benefits, vacation, personal or sick day benefits for this position.
    • The job description for this position includes, but is not limited to: Officers of this class shall be authorized to perform routine traffic detail, spectator control and similar duties. SLEO I officers shall have the power to issue summonses for disorderly persons and petty disorderly persons offenses, violations of municipal ordinances and violations of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes. The use of a firearm by an officer of this class shall be strictly prohibited and no Class One Officer shall be assigned any duties which may require the carrying or use of a firearm. No person may commence their duties as a Special Law Enforcement Officer unless they have successfully completed a training course approved by the Police Training Commission.
  • Qualifications and Duties for Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers:
    • There are no health benefits, vacation, personal or sick day benefits for this position.
    • The job description for this position includes, but is not limited to: Officers of this class shall be authorized to assist the Shift Commander. Perform Jailer Duties, Court Officer Duties, and prisoner transport to and from MCCI, report writing, radar detail, traffic enforcement, and Title 39 along with parking violations. Powers to issue summonses and powers to make arrests. Municipal Bank Escort, Road Details, Marina and Boardwalk Patrol and transport, and foot patrol in and around the tent area in Ocean Grove. No person may commence his duties as a Special Law Enforcement Officer unless he has successfully completed a training course approved by the Police Training Commission.
  • Qualifications and Duties for School Resource Officers (SLEO II):
    • Retired police officers with current Police Training Commission certification and those currently holding a Special Law Enforcement Officer – Class II certification with at least five (5) years of experience, to serve as a police officer will be considered. There are no health benefits, vacation, personal or sick day benefits for this position.
    • The job description for this position includes, but is not limited to: Officers will be primarily assigned to perform School Resource Officer duties in a Neptune Township Public School System. Officers of this class may also be authorized to assist the Shift Commander. Perform Jailer Duties, Court Officer Duties, and prisoner transport to and from MCCI, report writing, radar detail, traffic enforcement, and Title 39 along with parking violations. Powers to issue summonses and powers to make arrests. Municipal Bank Escort, Road Details, Marina and Boardwalk Patrol and transport, and foot patrol in and around the tent area in Ocean Grove.
